Abby is quite the softball player! She's awesome at second base!

summer fun...summer reading!

i would like to purpose an idea. a book club. not your average book club. more along the lines of a book review. this summer anyone who wants to be invovled would read a book of their choice. then post a review of that book for others to decide if they would like to read it. i don't know if you're like me but i don't want to waste my time reading a poorly written, predictable story when i know there are jewels out there to be discovered. who is interested?

Michael Njoroge
Location: Nakuru , Kenya
Activity: Grocery Store
Loan Amount: $800.00
Partner: Ebony Foundation (Eb-F)

Michael Njoroge is a man aged 33. He has a wife and two children. In addition to his family he also has a burden of providing both his and his wife’s parents their basic necessities. All of them depend on the money from the grocery business. He is required to pay for his diabetic father’s medication. It has been very hard for him to save enough money for all those needs. Most of the times they would eat meals which are cheap and poor in nutrition, in order to have money for school fees. He is also planning to start a dairy cow business for his wife who is unemployed, with the business she will not only supplement his income but she will improve their nutrition.
Njoroge requests to be funded with US$800 of which he will use US$300 to increase the grocery stock, US$180 to move to a better building, US$370 to but dairy cattle and US$150 for the cattle feed. With this he is quite sure of serving all his clients well and better provide for his family.

A New Knee!!

Just in case you haven't heard, Dad is having knee replacement surgery on June 13 here at UVA. I think the hospital stay is 3 days with about 2 months of varying degrees of rehab. He is currently having to ice it most days, so hopefully this will help. His daily basketball games with Joe and Allison don't help, but they LOVE having him come out and play "one on two" with them, so it is hard to resist.

All quiet on the eastern front. . .

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been checking the blog though, and have enjoyed everyone's posting and comments.

Things are going well here in State College. Spring has finally come --we got to put the first of our garden in yesterday ("we" meaning mostly Jamie and our friend, Ben). We're looking forward to working on it more before we leave for Scotland. Jamie also got honeybees on Saturday. I'm not sure how much I like them yet. They like to bother Hunter, so that's frustrating. He's pretty scared of them now and is quite ready to go inside once they start buzzing around him. That's no good. So we'll see. I'll try to post a picture of the hive in the next day or two.

Jamie went to an orthopedic doctor today because he's been having trouble with his knee and it was starting to interfere with running. The doctor thinks he has patellar tendonitis, which is NOT what Jamie wanted to hear. The treatment is rest. . . Jamie was hoping for more of a quick-fix so that he could get back to training for his marathon. Crazy man!

Being the romantics that we are, we went for a twelve mile walk on Saturday (which was our anniversary). I was testing out my new shoes and I don't think they'll work!! I ended up with blisters and hot spots out the whazoo. After my feet toughen up again, I'm going to try my old hiking shoes and see if they'll do. I guess it's better to find this kind of thing out several weeks before the trip, rather than on the first day of the walk.

Okay, well, I can't think of anything else to write about. Kind of boring here in the sticks. Hope you are all doing well and I look forward to seeing some of you soon!

eighty degrees with a chance of snow?

i wish i had taken a picture but last night, after two weeks of weather in the high seventies, it snowed. i think it was only about an inch total but enough to stick at least. i hope this is the last of the cold weather though because it is hard going back and forth!

i also got a 97% on my humanities midterm which most of the class got D's or below. mom wanted me to share that. one more month and classes are over!

John has really warmed up to Pete!

Our car, Shirley

Finally! A picture of Shirley. Here she is the other day out in front of our apartment. All of those little white flowers fell this past week and are now scattered everywhere on the ground. It almost looks like snow. Very pretty.
