Dog suggestions, anyone?
I have really been wanting a dog lately, but John's and my biggest concern is the size of our apartment (500 sq. ft.). Anyone know of a dog (that doesn't fit in the palm of your hand please), that would be good for this kind of environment? Maybe now is not a good time to get one but I'd like to know if there is a dog that wouldn't mind small spaces. Thanks for any suggestions.

an older one. . .
Good suggestion, Darcy.
i know small dogs get a bad rap but foxy lady (yorkie mix) really changed my mind on how great little dogs can be. she was so easy to take care of, required no excerise (no yard needed). I would say an older, short haired, small dog.
Thanks for the suggestions. Here's the website of our wonderful humane society in Kansas City if anyone wants to take a look and give us more specific suggestions. The older beagles are very tempting for me and John likes the small Jack Russel terriers. Not sure if any of those would work, though.

Hey Elizabeth and John -- I found a couple websites that might come in handy: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/apartment.htm
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/top-dog-breeds-for-apartment-life/page1.aspx
Both list breeds that are suitable for apartment living. I especially like the Ori Pei -- I love Shar Peis and they are the biggest sleepmongers that I've ever seen! Ben and Jenelle Kidd just got a Boston Terrier and "Mick" is the most fun little dog I've ever seen. So I agree with Lindsay -- there are smaller dogs out there that are a whole lot of fun to own.
PS: I'm jealous of all the black labs that your humane society has! Those are definitely NOT good apartment dogs, though.
